TDC Sawmills Greenfield Logline – WORLD FIRST Scan and Set Hewsaw Trio Line

March 2006:  Tui Technology recently completed the supply and implemenation of control systems and operator Scada system for a greenfield sawmill for TDC Sawmills, Whangarei.  Machines include new log infeed from Kitsell in Finland, new debarker from Valon Kone, new Hewsaw R250 Trio Logline from Veisto of Finland, along with Binsorter and Stacker.  Scope included machine control, scada operator control, Scan and Set functionality using solution from USNR Scanning, Supply of variable speed drives and setworks positioning for 70 axes.  Safety logic implemented using safety PLCs.  Whangarei, New Zealand.

Mareeba Softwoods Control

January 2009:Tui Technology have provided controls to this customer in their existing mill, when they purchased a second hand Soderhams Line from Sweden they contracted Tui to supply all new controls from Infeed  Line. Australia.

Great Hage – Animal Feed Press Upgrade

December 2006: Project includes weighing, position control of the press cylinders, check weighing, control of automatic sealers and interfacing with a JMP palletizing robot. This job was done using Siemens S7-300 PLC’s, a wireless connection to a laptop running Operator screens on WinCC flexible and 2 TP177a Operator panels.  Reporoa, New Zealand.

June 2005:  Supply and commissioning of control system and operator panel for board edger.  Masterton, New Zealand.

Ravenshoe Boiler Upgrade

May 2007:The boiler had never worked properly, the fuel feed was inflexible.  Fixing and fine tuning has resulted in high up times and a satisfied customer. Australia

January 2008:  Tui Technology was contracted to recommission and adapt an edger with a 3D scanner to suit the customers requirement. Masterton, New Zealand.

KPP Timberlands Kaingaroa Merchandising Line Upgrades

August 2008 to present:  Ongoing support contract for various controls improvements as the plant is ramping up in production.  Includes upgrading the acoustic grading system using Tui Technology methods for grading of shorter stems, incorporated into the existing labview program.  Also includes upgrades to stem gap control and stem tracking control.  Kaingaroa, New Zealand.

Gorton Timber Carriage

January 2009:New control system for 4 knee carriage and slabber. There is a S7-319 PLC controlling the operation of the machine, The carriage knees use a Delta RMC150e motion controller to position the knees, the slabber position control is done by the S7-319. WinCC Flexible runtime was used for the HMI, with a 15" touch screen for the operator. Milton, Otargo, New Zealand

Mamaku Sawmills Carriage

September 2005:  Supply and implemenation of Carriage Setwork Controls and operator control panel.  Mamaku, Rotorua District, New Zealand.

Fairfax Waikato DC replacement

March 2009:Waikato Times contracted Tui Technology to upgrade their 20 year old drives. Hamilton, New Zealand.

Kiwi Lumber Dannevirke Carriage

October 2008: Replace Carriage Control System and integrate to new USNR Perceptron Log Scanning System.  Supply of all PLC ontrol equipment, operator control panels and PLC software.  Carriage has 3 hydraulic knee positioners.

Ravenshoe Debarker

August 2005: Design and wire control system for Bucking, debarking (VK debarker) and log sorting line. This included a simple optimizer for bucking, and Y axis log scanner for sorting. Reports could be printed from TP270 operator panel.  Ravenshoe, Queensland, Australia.

Lakeland FJ28

October 2007:A new generation double head finger jointer was commissioned.  The crowding and press section are a new concept.  Tui provided the controls for the complete installation including destacker, planer infeed etc.  Mt Manganui, New Zealand

Fairfax Blenheim Press Upgrade

September 2006: Upgrade of control system and drives for a Printing Press.  Blenheim, New Zealand.

Niagara Dry Mill Sling Sorter

February 2009: Machine Controls and management console for a 30 Bay Sling Sorter. A Lakeland board turner controlled by a VSD allows the operator to view both sides of the board, while it sits in the lug chain, without lifting a finger. A wireless remote allows the bin walker to operate the bins freely.  Invercargill, New Zealand.

Ashburton Guardian Press

October 2007: Ashburton Guardian Press installed two Dauphin Graphic Towers and Dryers to allow the production of heat set print. The integrated control system consists of a Siemens Failsafe CPU, two Boolean Processors for cut-off control, a Scada system and DC Drives. Third party systems Technotrans Spray Dampening Unit and Quadtech Registration Control were also installed and commissioned. Ashburton, New Zealand

RH Tregoweth Trimmer

January 2007: Trimmer Control System.  Control of the chains, trimmer and live fence, handling of the measurement of the boards (Length, width and thickness) Detection of board taper.  Trim solution selection. Integration of a Matthews printer that prints the length of the boards, and 2 LED displays to show operators in the sawmill the current cube produced.  Te Kuiti, New Zealand.

April 2008: Operator and Setworks controls for Kockums twin resaw. Machine controls for Lakeland pickers allowing multiple product paths.  Dannevirke, New Zealand.

January 2005:  Automation of a board edger including saw setworks and operator control panel interface.  Tauranga, New Zealand.

Mamaku Edger

July 2008:After modernizing the rest of their plant with Tui Controls the customer upgraded their trimmer controls to improve the production and reliability.  Tui also added accurate dimension measurement so that the customer could gain control of the quality of the product.  Mamaku, New Zealand.

December 2004:  Automation and Drives for printing press for the Waikato Times Newspaper.  Hamilton, New Zealand.

Moutere Cooper End Dogger

January 2005: Control system for end dogging saw. This included the setworks for both saws and the control of log loading and outfeed board handling system. The cutting pattern was generated from current saw positions. This was done using a Siemens S7-300 PLC and OP170b operator panel.  Nelson, New Zealand.

Moutere End Dogger Upgrade

June 2006: A pre-position table was installed to the end-dogging saw. We designed and commissioned an automatic centering system. When dogged the saws set to opening cut position based on diameter measured. Log length was also measured, this was used to open dogs automatically to correct distance for next log.  Nelson, New Zealand.

KLP 3D Scanner installation

June 2007:The customer contracted Tui Technology to provide the automation component of the 3D carriage scanning, Tui were the obvious choice having successfully completed other installations.Putaruru, New Zealand.

September 2006: Control System for board fillet stacker for TDC Sawmills in Whangarei, New Zealand.  Controls include PLC, operator panel, profibus motor starters and safety PLC for isolation and estop.  Whangarei, New Zealand.

January 2005: Supply and commissioning of Siemens “Distributed Safety” PLC solution for isolation and emergency stop stations of a lay-up line.  8 overlapping safety zones implemented.  Tokoroa, New Zealand.

CBM Sawmills Carriage Control System

June 2004: Tui Technology recently peformed a carriage controls upgrade The upgrade consisted of new PLC controls of carriage knee setworks, operator touch screen and motor start/stops.  Tangiteroria in Northland, New Zealand. 

Great Hage: Animal Feed Conveyor Control System

January 2006: Control system for the infeed conveyor system for the Great Hage Animal Feed Presses. This included a laptop running Operator Screens on WinCC Flexible that had a wireless link to the PLC.  Reporoa, New Zealand.

TDC Sawmills Fillet Placer

February 2005:  Design, supply and install servo drives and control system on a new robotic fillet placer on an existing board stacker.  Whangarei, New Zealand.

Waimea Stacker Tally System:

November 2008:  Controls for the infeed and outfeed of a planer and stacker. Automated board tallying system integrated with stacker controls. Packet data automatically transfers to the sawmill database (Timber Smart) once packet is unloaded.  Nelson, New Zealand

Kiwi Putaruru Carriage Scanning Upgrade

December 2006:  Integration of USNR Perceptron Lasar Scanning into the existing control system for increased recovery and production.  Putaruru, New Zealand.

F/F Taranaki Drives Upgrade

November 2007:Taranaki Daily contracted Tui Technology to upgrade their existing DC drives. New Plymouth, New Zealand

The Press -  Drive Upgrade

August 2006: Upgrade to printing press DC drives at The Press Newspaper. Upgrade included new DC drives and controls interface.   Christchurch, New Zealand.

Lakeland Optimizing Saw

January 2009:Designed electrical control system, electrical drawings, manuals for the latest Lakeland optimizing saw. The boards are marked with fluroecent crayons which are then scanned and optimized by a S7-300 PLC, the optimization result is then passed to a Siemens Simotion/Sinamic's motion controller which handles the control of the saw and outfeed kicking belt. The saw can position boards very accurately at speeds up to 200m/min. After the shooks/components are cut they are kicked into bins which the operator defines. Blenheim, Marlborough, New Zealand.

Webco Solomon Islands Drive

August 2008:Tui Technology designed and built a complete Web Press AC drive system using Telemecanique Altivar71 Drive and Advantys Distributed IO including operator control desk touch screen and quick-pluggable components to be installed in the Solomon Islands.

Mamaku Sawmills Horizontal Resaw

November 2004: Setworks system for the Horizontal saw at Mamaku sawmill. A Siemens S7-300 was used for this job with a OP3 for the operator panel.  Mamaku, Rotorua District, New Zealand.

Mamaku Debarker

December 2007:Removing the operator by automating a 30 year old Nicholson Debarker has proved to be highly successful and keeps the company competitive with other suppliers.  Operators had bets that it wouldn’t work, luck they didn’t put money on it! Mamaku, New Zealand

Findlater Sawmills -Stress Grader

November 2006: Control System for new timber machine stress grader by Lakeland Steel for Findlater Sawmill.  Controls include PLC, Operator Scada control system and control of printer.  Winton, New Zealand.

Lakeland Finger Jointer

October 2004: Control system for latest Lakeland finger jointer. Servo controlled cutting carriage, and PUR gluing system.  Rotorua, New Zealand.

CHH Whangarei Acoustic Board Stiffness Grader

October 2008: New product that acoustically measures board stiffness by a tap head impulse.  Only taps the boards that the customer wants to grade.  Uses MoE calculations defined by international standards.  Allows the operator to monitor the results for the boards on the deck.  Whangarei, New Zealand

Steel & Track 24" Debarker

August 2005: Design and commission control system SATCO 24” Debarking head. This included pressure control of the rolls based on log diameter, and a cut to length function. This control system was mounted in mobile plant. This job was done with a Siemens S7-200 with TP070 operator panels.  Tokoroa, New Zealand.

Pukepine Finger Jointer Upgrade

January 2007: Finger Jointer Control System including position control of the carriage (Hydraulic). Te Puke, New Zealand

Ravenshoe Glue System

October 2008: Build electrical cabinet, electrical drawings, operating manual and write PLC code for glue applicator pump for a Grecon Turbo S finger jointer. The glue that was going to be applied was a PUR type. The pump speed was controlled by a VSD, required speed and valve timing was worked out by the PLC based on the speed that the finger jointer was moving. The valve timing was then adjusted by looking at the pressure in the glue line to ensure that a even application of glue was achived. The site noticed a large reduction of glue usage straight away. Press Relay logic replacement

August 2007:When the Christchurch Press faulted and couldn’t produce a Friday news paper they contracted Tui to sort the problem out.  We replaced the analog drive system controllers with two modern DC drives that gave them redundantcy. Christchurch, New Zealand.

Fiber Fresh Press Ram Position Control

October 2008: Changed the control of the main press rams from on/off control valves to a closed loop position control using proportional valves with Temposonic probes to provide position feedback. The program was then modified so that the ram would slow down just before the end of the product was pressed out of the end of the press. This slow down position automatically adjusts itself as the volume of product being pressed varies throughout the day. This upgrade has made the operation of the presses much easier, a first time operator can now use the press and not drop any bags which before the modification was very hard to do. December 2006: Automation Control System and Software for a Board Static 4-point Bend Tester.  System consists of easy-to-use software interface, automatic control of the test sequence, accurate calculation of stiffness and strength using linear regression, raw data export and calibration stick handling.  Waipa, Rotorua, New Zealand.

IWC TPS Rewinder

March 2004: Tui Technology recently implemented a control system for a TPS drum to drum rewinder for International Wire and Cable in Auckland, New Zealand.

June 2004: Control system for waste system in Flight Timber. This was the entire chip and sawdust system.  Blenheim, New Zealand.

Moutere 2006 Carriage Winch Upgrade

July 2006: Replaced manually operated valve that controlled the winch with a proportional valve controlled by the PLC. Cutting speed of the winch is controlled by the PLC. The operator has the ability to put the machine into auto once cutting pattern selected, PLC will then cut log automatically. The pre-position carriage valves were also changed, this is now position controlled making the operation much faster. A Danfoss joystick was installed for the operator.  Nelson, New Zealand.

June 2008:The customer was feed up with downtime on their boiler.  Tui were contracted to design and upgrade the control system.  The customer is more than happy with the result, with better control and low downtime. Te Puke, New Zealand

June 2006:  Carriage control system including setworks and operator touch screen.  Dannevirke, New Zealand.

Fiber Fresh Mixing Decks

April 2009: Complete new control system to control existing mixing decks. Original control was completely manual. The new control system includes a remote control for the loader driver so that he does not have to get out of the loader to start and stop the system. Belt weighing to measure how much product has been feed from the decks and the rate at which it is entering the mixer, this rate is used to work out the required Molasses flow rate. The Molasses flow rate is now controlled by a flow valve with feed back to the PLC so is running as a closed loop PID to ensure that the correct amount of Molasses is being applied. There has been load sensing put onto most motors to ensure that they are running and not under or over loaded, this is to prevent major blockages as things are detected as being a problem and something is done about it straight away. A variable message display was installed so the loader driver can see the status of the system and production statistics to ensure that the correct amount of product is mixed. February 2008: Supply and integration of printing using standard HP heads.  Printing on Green boards at the back of the Trimmer transverse chain.  Printing board details such as length, grade, date etc. Masterton, New Zealand

Webco: Bali Post

Tui Technology carried out internal machine wiring for Four 4High Coldset Printing Towers, Four Reel Splicers and Two Double Infeeds to be installed in Bali Indonesia.

Waimea Dimter/Woodeye Relocation

May 2008: Woodeye scanner and Dimter 350 line decommissioned and packed for relocation from Atvidaberg, Sweden to Nelson New Zealand. The line consisted of a automatic packet infeed to singulate boards, the Woodeye scanner, the Dimter 350 saw and three stackers. Electrical documentation was translated and updated. Cables were labeled and additional documentation produced allowing the onsite electrician in New Zealand to re-connect the machines.   Nelson, New Zealand.

Webco APN Tauranga Cut Of

August 2008: Tui Technology designed and installed a Web Press automatic cutoff control system with control for two independent webs. System utilized Sick Scanners, S7300 PLC with Boolean Processor and Simatic Touch Panel HMI. Tauranga New Zealand.

November 2004:  Automation of a can filling machine.  Tauranga, New Zealand.

CHH Whangarei Timber Printer

September 2007: Supply and integration of printing using standard HP heads.  PLC control implemented both for printing of average MoE or minimum MoE.  Graphic and text capable and four colours from a single unit.  Whangarei, New Zealand.

Steel & Track Grapples

September 2005: 2 Control systems were done for the latest SATCO 630 felling heads. This job was done with Siemens S7-200 CPUs and TD200’s for the operator panels.  Tokoroa, New Zealand.

Waimea Printer

December 2007: Supply and integration of printing using standard HP heads.  Printing on pre-MSG graded boards at the back of the planer.  Ink capable of surviving kiln diffusion process.  Printer Graphic and text capable.  Nelson, New Zealand.

Fibre fresh Modifications to Press for new Valves

October 2007:Fit position control onto 2 of the 3 press cylinders to get the cylinders to stop in the correct position.  This made the operation of the presses much smoother, with less downtime due to cylinder failures, and cylinder positioning problems. Reparoa, Rotorua, New Zealand.

Kiwi Lumber Masterton

October 2008:Debarker Upgrade.  Commission a second hand VK debarker (single ring). Installed a new ET200s node to control the new debarker motors, modified the code to suit the new debarker. Updated electrical drawings. Masterton, Wairapara, New Zealand.

International Wire and Cable Extruder Line

December 2004:  Automation of a cable extruder for International Wire and Cable of Auckland, New Zealand.

Ashburton Guardian

July 2008: Tui Technology fitted a Speed Monitoring System to a Goss Community Coldset Web Press to arrest speed problems with an old drive system under inching. System utilized a Sick Encoder, S7200 PLC with Ethernet interface to existing S7300 control system. Ashburton New Zealand.

Hewsaw Mike Lambert Log/Lumber Handling

November 2004: Replaced a Mitsubishi PLC that had failed and needed replacing ASAP so that log infeed decks could run. Control was of 2 log decks and a step feeder.  Kawerau, New Zealand.

Redstag A Grader Paint

May 2008: This was a code modification to a Micrologix 1500 to add several more paint markers to the system to handle more board lengths. The code was also improved to make it more reliable, the original code was a FIFO arrangement, if the queue got out somehow then the boards would be incorrectly marked for their grade. To fix this we change the queue to a shift register.Rototrua, New Zealand

CHH Broken J-Bar detection

November 2008: Automated check for broken or bend J-lugs by measuring length of J-lugs and automated enabling/disabling for board loading. Issuing service request message. Whangarei, New Zealand

Fiber Fresh Grain Silos

April 2009:Controls added to the grain silos to check the operation of diverters, level detection installed so the operator can see how much grain is in each silo and to automatically start filling the next silo when the required level has been reached in each silo. Reparoa, Rotorua, New Zealand.
